I never realized how much money you could save with rechargeable batteries. Do yourself a favor and get them.

Hey Jay: I just found out Panasonic sells a new NiMH battery that comes precharged, and recharges in 45 minutes. They also guarantee a decent shelf life of a couple of years, making them the ideal replacement. That is, if their current draw is adequate!

hmmm- the dumb charger should start flashing the LEDs to demand that you remove the charged batteries.
Since it has red LEDs, even those could be used to alert the user.
on Twitter, the hashtag is #uxfail

for now, I’m using the NIMH batteries. Since I have a small inverter in my car, We make a practice of keeping spare batteries charged. Next round, maybe I’ll go Alkaline? Ve Shall See….

Note to readers: I have been in touch with PureEnergy about the content of this post, and Stephen Meldrum asked me to remove the photo of the charger where the batteries leaked. I politely advised that to do so would be a disservice. I consider my experience to be beneficial knowledge about the consequences of not using these products properly. In addition, my dad recently destroyed his NiMH charger when he attempted to recharge a set of rechargeable alkaline batteries. Consider these warnings:

Public Service Announcement

Rechargeable alkaline batteries are guaranteed to work well, if you obey the following usage conditions (applies to ALL alkiline technology):

Do not attempt to recharge regular alkaline batteries

Remove batteries from equipment before storing it for any length of time

Only charge rechargeable alkaline batteries using a charger designed specifically for that use

Do not leave rechargeable alkaline batteries in the charger longer than 24 hours

Anything else I may have missed?

@Wayne: What will really help the market for rechargeable alkaline batteries is if electronic device manufacturers would change the way their sensors measure battery life. My Canon A620 camera consistently registers "low battery" based on the lower current draw of a rechargeable alkaline. However, the current is still sufficient to take pictures and record movies.

This explains everything!

I have over 40 AA and AAA NiMH batteries that, lately, have been leaving us feeling a little FLAT.

It's as if they haven't been holding their charge at all. (We tend to pre-charge them, and then store them for use.)

No wonder. I'm switching to rechargeable Alkaline.
Thanks, man!
