Internet—forever but not permanent

When I saw The Other Coast (image) comic strip in the paper this morning, I had to laugh. So much of today’s communications media: phone, text/SMS/MMS, email, TV, online publishing—are only available as long as there is enough storage to keep them. The Way-Back Machine on the Internet Archive helped me recover my Tablet PC Blogs posts in a jam, but if all the hard drives in the universe were full, what would have happened then?

In contrast to my post about what happens on the Internet living forever, I present the alternative view. My friend Wayne Radford, the self-proclaimed “King of Poco”, put this bug in my ear over lunch one rainy afternoon. The short version is that our online publishing efforts, though wide reaching, are only temporal.

Tony Macchiato from Starbucks FTW!

The Tony Macchiato ~ AKA the Triple Venti Peppermint Soy Caramel Drizzle Macchiato Style Latte

The Tony Macchiato ~ AKA the Triple Venti Peppermint Soy Caramel Drizzle Macchiato Style Latte

As the new year rolled around I thought I would stop drinking coffee, or rather, espresso—more specifically, my Triple Venti Peppermint Soy Caramel Drizzle Macchiato-style Latte, which I want to officially label as the Tony Macchiato. I first stumbled onto this drink the morning after my wife and I celebrated Christmas 2007 with the staff from a previous employer at a hotel in downtown Vancouver.

Starting from its humble beginnings as merely a Caramel Macchiato with peppermint syrup instead of vanilla, the drink evolved over the last year and a bit into its current incarnation. I have my barista friends, and even Starbucks itself, to thank for that.

Don’t make your allergies my problem

Jan 18, 2009 in Personality, Philosophy

I love Joel Stein. In his article that concludes peanut allergies are an issue only in rich, lefty communities, he compares a recent medical report to a short story he wrote years ago about a severe allergy epidemic that crippled the future until it was discovered the symptoms were psychosomatic. Funny that he didn’t show it to anyone, because he usually says the very thing on everyone’s mind that they wouldn’t dare say in public. I myself have often wondered why in recent years it appears that everyone and their dog can be allergic to peanuts.

WHY I haven’t blogged

Dec 02, 2008 in Personality, Productivity, Technology

So I says to my wife, “you know, I’d really like to work as an independent contractor for awhile and really get to see the world.” The following day, my manager told me that they’d lost my contract as a technical writer. I wanted to say, “Would you like me to help you find it?” Instead I played it cool. “Great! Lots of time for blogging.” As I wrote my last full post on November 6, obviously I didn’t spend as much time blogging as I thought. What did I do instead? It couldn’t have been because I ran out of things to say.

About those ultra-mobile tablet/touch screen PCs

Nov 02, 2008 in Technology

Forgive me Father, for I have not yet sinned—but just might. After looking at specs for laptop computers yet again, I am facing another bout of gear lust. We all know that lust is one of the seven deadly sins. The virtual ink is not even dry on my last blog post, yet already the urge is so strong I need to confess my desires right away.

To think: all I was looking for was a Windows-compatible laptop/notebook computer with a full-size 6-pin Firewire (IEEE1394) port and graphics card with dedicated RAM. The machines below don’t have Firewire. They don’t have dedicated graphics hardware. But you must admit, they are cool. If a picture is worth a thousand words, these videos should be just over the top.

I can be such a geek

Jul 09, 2008 in Creativity, Personality, Philosophy, Strategy

Our manager called a team meeting for us to meet a new co-worker. I introduced myself as the guy who hits the ground running, taking on all sorts of different projects which made me curious about hacking the embedded system within my 4-port gigabit wireless draft-N router and my broadband residential gateway at home. A co-worker introduced herself as someone who loves working but she rarely uses the computer after the kids go to bed unless she needs to post pictures of her family vacation on Facebook. I couldn’t have seen that one coming from a mile away.

Days like these

Jul 04, 2008 in Creativity, Productivity, Strategy, Technology

Some days it feels like I hit the ground running. Today it felt more like I lost my breath as I chased the ground as it ran off well ahead of me. I never did catch up; and you know, for the first time in my life, I felt like shutting down my computer, waving a white flag, and sitting on the beach sipping a triple venti soy peppermint macchiatto with extra caramel drizzle.
